Sources facts & figures

There are many facts and figures on tourism and recreation available. All sorts of organizations carry out researches on the  theme. However, these data are not always easy to find. Research Centre for (Coastal)Tourism collects a broad range of data from various sources. In Holland, national agreements have been reached on this topic as a result of which all the provinces make use of the same data sources as much as possible, so that figures can be compared. These agreements have been laid down in a 2009 memo: the national R&T standard. This standard was drawn up by the “Kennis As” under the authority of the”Inter Provinciaal Overleg”. You can find more information on the background of these data on this page.

ContinuVakantieOnderzoek

TheContinuVakantieOnderzoek (continuous holiday research) (CVO) is a large-scale research of the holiday behaviour of the Dutch, which is carried out four times a year among a panel of 6,500 Dutch people. The research is carried out by NBTC-NIPO Onderzoekand provides a broad and in-depth insight into the developments and trends on the Dutch holiday market based on its long history (from 1980). CVO continuously registers both long and short holidays in Holland and abroad. The research maps a large number of aspects of holidays undertaken, among which destinations, lengths of holidays, booking institutions, ways of booking, types of holidays, activities undertaken, spending, modes of transport and forms of accommodation.

More information can be found on the website of NBTC-NIPO Research.

ContinuVrijeTijdsOnderzoek

“ContinuVrijeTijdsOnderzoek”The“ContinuVrijeTijdsOnderzoek”(continuous leisure research) (CVTO) is carried out by NBTC-NIPO Onderzoektwice per year since 2004. It is a large-scale research of the leisure behaviour of the Dutch population and maps the most varied activities on a continuing basis and spread across the entire year. Leisure activities are defined as "all (day)recreation activities that are undertaken outside the own house and for which you are minimally one hour away from home (including travel time)". A visit to family / friends /acquaintances and activities undertaken during holidays are outside this scope.

More information can be found on the website of NBTC-NIPO Research.

Statistics Accommodations

The Statistics Accommodations is carried out by “het Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek” (Central Bureau for Statistics, CBS) and aims at providing an overview in figures  of the offer and use of holiday accommodations in Holland. CBS collects data via the accommodations, in contrast with CVO and CVTO. The research population consists of all holidays accommodation providers in Holland with at least 5 beds in a hotel orguest house or at least 20 beds at a campsite, holiday park, youth or group accommodation. Marinas and own accommodations, such as permanent stands or second houses are not part of the population. Spot checks are taken from the population, the accommodations in the spot check are approached on a monthly basis. This way, the number of guests is registered (according to nationalityand number of nights). Both Dutch and foreign guests are registered. CBS translates this into data for the entire population.

More informationcan be found on the CBS website.

LISA Vestigingenregister

As the tourist-recreation sector is split up in all sorts of business branches and sectors, the employment size of this sector is difficult to fathom. By making a selection of the branches the tourist-recreation sector can be well-defined. The “LISA Vestigingenregister” is a data file with data on all the establishments in the Netherlands where paid employment is carried out. Per establishment address details, the branchcode and the amount of employees are known. As a result, LISA can provide data per branch on every random geographical level. The data are collected once per year, in most provinces on 1 April. This means that seasonal employment is hardly mapped.

More informationcan be found on the LISA website.
